Directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski, Three Colours: Blue (1993) follows Julie, a woman confronting profound grief after the sudden death of her husband and daughter. In the wake of this tragedy, she attempts to detach from her past and live in emotional isolation, only to find that freedom is more complex than absence.

The film is the first in Kieślowski’s acclaimed Three Colours trilogy, inspired by the French Revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity—with Blue exploring the theme of liberty through a deeply personal lens. Visually and emotionally saturated with the colour blue, the film uses lighting, music, and cinematography to embody Julie’s psychological state, evoking themes of sorrow, memory, and quiet resilience.

Three Colours: Blue won multiple international awards, including Best Actress for Juliette Binoche and Best Cinematography at the 1993 Venice Film Festival. The film is in French with English subtitles.
