Connecting Threads is a solo exhibition by Barkindji artist Carmel Mackie which brings together the diverse elements of Carmel Mackie’s evolving practice, with a focus on the expressive possibilities of thread. As part of the artist talk Carmel will talk about the themes of her works and the techniques she uses to create them.

Free motion embroidery plays a central role in her process, adding movement and depth to each work. Using thread, Carmel Mackie also pays homage to the women in her family and the generations of mothers who crafted out of necessity. Her art is grounded in care, memory, and a deep respect for the natural and cultural world.

This exhibition is the outcome of Carmel Mackie receiving the Liverpool Powerhouse Aboriginal Scholarship Award in 2024 at the 32nd Annual Mil-Pra AECG Art Exhibition & Prizes. The Liverpool Powerhouse Aboriginal Scholarship Award is proudly sponsored by Dharug Strategic Management Group, David Harding & Nabila Ansari and supported by Liverpool Powerhouse as part of the Annual Mil-Pra AECG Art Exhibition and Prizes.

Carmel will talk about her practice and art making techniques as part of the talk.
